Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert once had ‘grass-fed, grade A’ beef. Now, they’re releasing a song together

“I was like, ‘Look, I’m not trying to be your friend, but we should write this song at least,’” Musgraves said she told Lambert.

A long-rumored feud has officially ended. Country music’s favorite frenemies, Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert, have collaborated on a new track together, “Horses and Divorces,” for Musgraves’s upcoming album, Middle of Nowhere, out this Friday. The duet came as a surprise to fans who were under the impression that Musgraves and Lambert had some bad blood.

Musgraves and Lambert, two country superstars, have frequently occupied the same spaces over the years, and some fans have noted the palpable tension between them. Neither woman had confirmed that they were feuding — until now. Musgraves, while chatting with Variety for its new cover story published on Wednesday, set the record straight after years of speculation: Yes, she and Lambert had beef.

“Oh, there was,” Musgraves confirmed. “It was grass-fed, grade A.”

So, how did the Musgraves and Lambert feud start, and what prompted them to make up after all these years? Ahead of the “Horses and Divorces” release, Yahoo is taking a closer look at their years of beefing — from Lambert’s alleged unconsented use of Musgraves’s track to her shouting out Musgraves at the Country Music Awards.

‘Mama’s Broken Heart’ started it all
Musgraves and Lambert began feuding in 2013 after Lambert recorded a song Musgraves wrote. The “Space Cowboy” singer had written a track called “Mama’s Broken Heart” around the same time that she was crafting her debut studio album, Same Trailer Different Park. Musgraves had originally intended to record that track for herself, but it was pitched to and recorded by Lambert. The track ended up appearing on Lambert’s album, Four the Record.

While it’s common for artists to end up recording songs that another artist has written, the difference here, per Musgraves, is that Lambert recorded and released “Mama’s Broken Heart” without her permission.

“There was all this excitement behind ‘Mama's Broken Heart’ for me. It was gonna be my first single and I loved the song so much,” Musgraves told NPR in March. “I had been a staff writer for years at that point, writing for other people and had finally felt like I was collecting songs that felt like me that I didn't wanna pitch to anyone else. Then, the song gets pitched to her without my consent or knowledge. It was a tricky situation. She ended up loving the song and she really wanted it. And I had other co-writers to consider.”

In retrospect, Musgraves thinks it all worked out for the best. She ended up recording “Merry Go Round,” which she told NPR made more sense for her “aesthetically and lyrically.”

Miranda’s speech at the 2013 CMAs — and Kacey’s reaction to it
For years, rather than engage in any fiery back-and-forth on social media or in the press, Musgraves and Lambert distanced themselves. There is, however, one notable instance from the 2013 Country Music Awards.

During the ceremony, Lambert was on the stage to accept the award for Female Vocalist of the Year where she shouted out Musgraves, who was also a winner that night.

“Kacey, congratulations on new artist. That was awesome. These Texas girls gotta stick together,” Lambert said. The camera then cuts to Musgraves sitting in the audience, looking unimpressed.

Musgraves shared a clip of herself reacting to that speech in March. It went viral and reignited the conversation of their feud, leading some to believe it was intended to promote their upcoming duet.

“You knew that I’d said some things about you ????@mirandalambert,” Musgraves wrote on her Instagram story, alongside the clip. Lambert then reshared Musgraves’s Instagram story, adding her own comment, “well I’ve done my fair share of shit talkin too.”

To some fans, the brief Instagram exchange seemed to point to a reconciliation between the country stars.

‘Horses and Divorces’ and squashing that ‘grass-fed, grade A’ beef
Musgraves confirmed to Variety that she and Lambert had, in fact, been feuding for years, saying it’s why she loves their new track, “Horses and Divorces.” It didn’t come from “some contrived place in a writing room,” she said. It was real.

“We’ve come together after years of really, honestly, not being friends. I had this idea one day when I saw her on Instagram, riding one of her horses, and I thought, ‘Well, I guess we have two things in common: horses and divorces.’ And I was like, ‘Wait, that’s a song,’” Musgraves said. “Then I took it a step further: ‘What if I write it with her? What if it’s a duet? F**k it, I’m gonna reach out.’ I hadn’t spoken to her in years and was like, ‘Hey, I have this idea. If anybody would get it, it would be you. We’ve had our shit over the years, but this would be really funny.’ And she was like, ‘I’m down.’”
