The writer, producer and podcaster, 44, revealed on Instagram Wednesday, Oct. 28, that Noah's (Adam Brody) proposal to Joanne (Kristen Bell) mirrored her own engagement to husband Simon Tikhman in August 2019.

"So about a month before he proposed, we got this invitation to a wedding vow renewal," she said over footage of her flipping through the invite. "It had attire and a schedule for the whole weekend. He never really drew attention to it."

"He said, 'This is kind of a work thing. You're welcome to come with me. You don't have to, no pressure,' " she recalled. "But you know, I think it could be kind of romantic and nice.' "

Erin said he even roped her into getting a manicure done with her niece so that her "nails would be ready" for the big moment. She shared that she had no suspicions of his plans to propose at the time, as Tikhman "wasn't acting weird at all."

"Meanwhile my sister was flying to Napa with my ring from New York," Erin shared. "So, Simon and I get to the hotel in Napa and the front desk literally hands us an envelope with our name on it and tells us what the activities are for the weekend with the wedding, because Simon had flown up there and prepped them all to pretend that this wedding was happening."

Foster said she and Tikhman arrived at a Napa Valley vineyard where signs pointed them toward what they believed was a fake vow renewal ceremony. When they were told the other guests had gone on a wine tour, she recalled being relieved they had missed it — a moment that was later mirrored in Nobody Wants This.

"Meanwhile our families are fully just hiding inside that big barn," she added.

The video then showed footage of Foster's family watching the proposal from inside the barn. At one point, her sister, Sara Foster, 45, could be heard screaming, "Oh God," as Tikhman got down on one knee.

The clip then cut to the corresponding scene in the Netflix series, in which Bell's character, Joanne, gasps as Brody's Noah gets down on one knee.

"Oh my God. Noah, Oh my God. We're at Bryan's wedding," she tells him.

"And that's how I got engaged to a psychotically romantic genius," Erin concluded, adding photos from their engagement reception.

She captioned the video, "the truth behind Brian's wedding."

Nobody Wants This is loosely based on Erin's real-life romance with Tikhman, whom she met at a Los Angeles gym in 2018. The couple married during a New Year's Eve celebration in 2019 and welcomed their first child, a daughter, in May 2024.

Erin, who is an executive producer on the show, previously called the series a love letter to her marriage. She said in June 2025, "I don't feel like season 1 was more true to my life, and season 2 is more fiction. They both are really a mix."
